It's often the case - water contains minerals. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Our bodies need minerals and without minerals, water can be aggressive (dissolving anything it can). However, mineral water sure can make a mess!
Mineral build-up is the result of minerals in the water being deposited, often leaving a "film," or white coating. We see it most often on glass shower doors, shower heads, faucets, tea kettles, water heaters, on cars after a car wash, etc.
Before treating water for mineral build-up, it's important to understand which minerals are present. We recommend bringing a water sample to our Asheville Office (see Collection Instructions here). Our free reliable water testing is quick and tells you what you need to know in order to choose an effective treatment option for minerals in your water. For instance, if your water contains calcium and magnesium (hardness), we would recommend installing a water softener. However, high TDS (total dissolved solids) or silica can also result in mineral deposits, which a water softener would not be effective in those cases.
If you are noticing mineral film or build-up and you currently have water filtration, bring us a treated water sample, and a raw water sample. If you don't have water filtration, bring us a water sample from the most frequently used faucet (typically the kitchen sink). When it comes to treating for excess minerals in water, water chemistry and use-case matters. If you have any questions or concerns with your water quality, please feel free to contact us - we're here for you, we appreciate your trust, and we look forward to seeing you!
