Here in western North Carolina, you can expect random power outages, including a blip here and there. The backwashing filtration equipment that we install requires power to function correctly, so if the power goes out - even for a fraction of a second, the system may be affected. Each valve has an internal computer board that is equipped with a battery back-up. The battery serves a useful purpose but can’t catch everything.
It's important to note that the battery back-up is only responsible for maintaining the computer's memory. It's not enough to power the valve when the power is out. With that said, the little power blips or "brown-outs" will often frazzle the battery and throw off the current time of day displayed on the valve. It's important the time displayed on the valve be set to the current time of day so that the filter regenerates at that correct time. Therefore, we recommend checking the valve(s) routinely to make sure the time is correct. For step-by-step instructions on setting the time on the valve, see our troubleshooting page here. Also, the valve's internal settings (including regeneration times) are stored in solid state, which means power outages and battery failures will not affect these solid state settings.
In conclusion, the time can be thrown off on backwashing filtration when power outages occur and it's always a good idea to routinely verify that the times are correct on the display.
