A reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system is commonly used to produce bottled water you buy at the store. Many people choose to buy a small point-of-use version, typically located under a sink or on a countertop. This can certainly cut down on plastic waste and be cost effective in the long run (buying bottled water adds up). However, it's important to know some RO facts before you invest in a reverse osmosis system.
Can I install my own RO System?
Of course. There are a ton of products available online, at your local hardware store, and from filtration experts like Mountain Water Systems. There is a degree of difficulty worth considering. If you're going to DIY an RO system, make sure you do plenty of research. Make sure you understand your water chemistry and usage prior to purchasing a unit. Also, be mindful of the quality of the system, availability of replacement filters/membranes, and compatibility.
RO water is the best, right?
Contrary to popular belief, reverse osmosis treatment does not completely purify water and in actuality provides a specific percent reduction of each contaminant. Certain contaminants such as nitrates, dissolved gasses (such as h2s), industrial solvents and other volatile organic compounds (VOC's) can potentially make it past an RO unit. Also, RO systems are not intended to treat bacteria and pretreatment is required to prevent fouling (clogging) of the RO membrane. Furthermore, it's important to know that there are yearly maintenance requirements, including membrane/filter replacements, etc. and costs associated.
Is there a whole-house RO system?
There are whole house RO systems, but they require a larger commercial RO unit as well as additional equipment to ensure the RO water does not damage the plumbing, appliances, faucets and fixtures for the entire house since RO water by itself is extremely corrosive. Ultimately, it requires installing a small municipal water treatment system which is why reverse osmosis is typically utilized for point-of-use drinking water, which is more practical and affordable... but it can be done!
