Salt Crystals

Water softeners utilize a brine solution, consisting of water and salt, during the regeneration (self cleaning) process. The brine solution is created by adding salt to the brine tank, which gets drawn into the softener tank during the brine cycle of the regeneration process. There are different options available in stores for water softener salt. Today's blog will be a short one, because it's really this simple... salt crystals.

There are other options out there, such as salt pellets and iron fighter salt. Based on our experience in the field, we don't recommend these options. The pellets tend to brick up and cause bridging. Iron fighter salt costs more, and is not necessary in most cases. The right choice, in our opinion, is the salt crystals. They are much less likely to brick and they typically settle in the brine tank nicely.

There is a water softener brand called "Diamond Crystal" that makes both crystals and pellets - its name often being misleading ("Crystal"). Make sure you are purchasing salt crystals, not salt pellets. There is a difference, and it very well may be the difference in your water quality. Remember, salt crystals (see image below).
